One of the most beloved characters of classic literature is Anne Blythe nee Anne Shirley. I first picked up Anne of Green Gables when I was about nine or ten. And she's been my best friend ever since. Lucy Maud Montgomery, a Canadian writer created this red headed girl as a fancy and found that the character had a life of her own. What started as a single novel became a eight book series with an accompanying book.

The series starts with the arrival of Anne Shirley an orphan from birth who has been bounced from one foster family to another, used as 'help' to look after the family's children. This time she arrives in Avonlea, a little town on Prince Edward's Island to be adopted by the Cuthbert siblings, Matthew and Marilla. Unfortunately, she is unaware that they asked for a little boy and not a thirteen year old girl. When Matthew arrives at the train station to find the wrong child, he cannot bring himself to tell her the truth but instead brings her home, finding her company refreshing. Naturally, Marilla does not approve and wants to send Anne back the next day. But as the day passes Anne slowly wins her over and they adopt her.

The first book chronicles Anne's hilarious journey of getting used to a new place and going to school. Ever lovable, the red head charms her way into the hearts of many while evoking jealousy among others. It is fun to read her silly scrapes and her determination to make her foster family proud. Anne Shirley is a character unlike any other.

The sentence structure and the beautiful grammar makes this book even better read as we enjoy Anne's use of 'long/big words' and dramatic expressions. The dry wit of Marilla that hides her soft hearted interior while readers immediately fall in love with Matthew who's understanding of Anne and gentle reprimanding makes him an ideal father-figure. With other funny people like Rachel Lynde, the Barry's and Gilbert Blythe, Avonlea comes alive from out of the pages.

I recommend this book with all my heart because it is truly a classic that you must experience at least once.

My rating: 10 out of 10
