lets talk reality television.

Was the world surprise when Lauren Conrad, (pictured at bottom left) star of MTV's "THE HILLS" (a reality television show about a girl and her friend who just moved to LA to try their luck in show business) decided to write a book? Yes, the world was. She's a fashion designer, why's she writing a book?

But when she announced her book is going to be about a girl, Jane Roberts moving to L.A. to work for an events manager who ends up being signed into a reality tv show, the world when "oh". What a shocker. But if anyone was to write about L.A. girls being followed by cameras most of the day, Lauren Conrad would be the perfect author. She knows that genre after her five seasons on the aforesaid THE HILLS. She knows where the cameras go, she knows how awkward it is to fall in love with the world watching and she knows how friends get jealous when the public roots for you.

In L.A.Candy Jane Roberts and her best friend Scarlett first move to L.A. for different reasons. Scarlett or 'Scar' for her education and Jane for Fiona Chen Events, the top events planning company in Hollywood. But after bumping into a television producer in a club, they find themselves agreeing to star in the latest reality television show, L.A.Candy. Along with two other "newly discovered average people", Madison and Gaby they sign releases to be filmed by a camera crew who shamelessly zoom in on every moment of their lives.

We see their world from the points of view of Jane, Scar and Madison (well, Gaby's character is underdeveloped compared to the others) who respectively love, hate and need the spotlight. Madison is the antagonist in the book as she thinks Jane does not deserve being the lead as Scar plays Jane's caring best friend who tries to keep her roommate centered.

The storyline isn't absolutely fantastic but whats interesting about this book is the insight readers get into the production of a reality television show. We learn about the microphones, the release forms, the social situations that are planned for them and the retakes of moments. Lauren Conrad needless to say, uses her 'former friends' from her own reality show as inspiration to write though she denies it. You can see parts of Heidi Montag in Madison and Audrina Patridge in Scar.

I bought the book at a sale and I can't say I totally regret my purchase. Its an interesting read if you want to see the truth behind the glamour of tv. But if you're looking for something to really sink into, pass on this.

My rating: 6 out of 10
