The Bookish Book

The Bookish Synopsis

Heather Hamilton is always wishing for things. Not just big stuff - like word peace, or that Brad Pitt wants her as his next leading lady - but little, everyday wishes made without thinking. With her luck, she knows they'll never come true...

Until one day she buys some heather from a gypsy. Suddenly the bad hair days stop. A handsome American answers her ad for a housemate. She starts seeing James - The Perfect Man who sends her flowers, excels in the bedroom, and isn't afraid to say 'I love you'.

But are these wishes-come-true a blessing or a curse? Does getting what you want make you happy? And is there such a things as too much foreplay?

My Bookish Idea

Hmm, wishes. What an interesting topic to meddle with.

I've got to admit this although it sort of sounds shameful. The main reason I wanted to read this book was because I was attracted to the colourful cover. And the book's tagline is kind of catchy. What a girl wants isn't always what a girl needs.

So the story starts with how unlucky Heather Hamilton's life is. She's always stepping on chewing gum, it rains when she doesn't have an umbrella and her hair loves having bad days when she has a date.

All that is, until she buys this lucky heather. Funny how she has a "lucky" name but her life doesn't seem to reflect her name. (And by the way, I have no idea what's a lucky heather so don't ask me what it is.)

Suddenly Heather leads a charmed life. Everything she wishes for comes true. From parking spaces to England winning a football match. (Apparently in the book, England's football team is unbelievably lousy so them winning a match is like a miracle.)

However, Heather soon realises that getting all her wishes isn't what she needs. I have to admit that I think Heather is ungrateful. When her wishes don't come true, she moans. When her wishes do come true, she also moans.

But anyhow, she soon loses her lucky heather and rejoices because her life is "normal" again.

As in the book, it goes to show that too much of a good thing is equally as bad as having nothing at all. I believe that having a balance in life is the best.

Though I wouldn't exactly complain if someone actually buys me a set of You're Beautiful Director's Cut DVD.

The Bookish Rating

5/10

"Honestly, I don't want to sound like a spoilsport, but when people say fancy dress is fun, who exactly is it supposed to be fun for?"
