The Bookish Books

The Bookish Synopsis

The Black Magician trilogy is a fantasy novel series by Australian author Trudi Canavan. The books follow a slum-dwelling girl named Sonea who, although born and raised in the slums of Imardin, discovers that she has natural magical abilities usually restricted to the upper classes. They describe her attempts to escape capture by the Magicians' Guild and gain control of her powers, her struggle to fit in and learn magic, and ultimately her attempts save Kyralia using the one type of magic forbidden from use.

My Bookish Idea

Recently one of my classmates suggested for me to read The Hunger Games, a series by Suzanne Collins. (Great, something else to read!) According to her, the series leans more toward to the fantasy genre.

While on the fantasy topic, my mind wandered to one of my favourite series of all time, Trudi Canavan's The Black Magician trilogy. Now I'm in the process of re-reading the whole series because it is just so awesome. At least that's what I and hundreds of readers out there think.

Why exactly do I say that The Black Magician trilogy is awesome? For one, it keeps me addicted to it. When I first started reading about the adventures of Sonea, I would read late into the night (and at times, neglecting other aspects of my life). The storyline and plot is just so captivating.

I love how Trudi Canavan describes her character and the fantasy elements in her book (eg. animals and beasts) in utmost detail. It gives me the feeling that I know the characters personally and sometimes I can even visualise the fictitious animals to the point that they seem "real" to me.

That's saying a lot since not all authors can do that. I can say that Canavan is comparable to J.K. Rowling (the Harry Potter series is another all-time favourite of mine) in her own way.

It is also interesting to note that throughout the time I was reading the series, I was kept on edge. There was so much suspense going on that sometimes I feel as if I might die if I don't keep on reading. These moments are intensified at the end of chapters. It's like watching a really suspenseful TV show and the episode ends right at a climax point.

And may I point out that the targeted audience for The Black Magician's trilogy are actually children? Seriously, I'm under the impression that the best books are written for children. Look at the Harry Potter series, The Chronicles of Narnia series and The Lord of The Rings series. All are critically-acclaimed books and all are also targeted at children. If I happen to chance on any more "childrens' books" like The Black Magician trilogy, I would seriously stick to just reading childrens' books.

After reading all the gushing objective opinion (okay fine, a little biased) I did on this series, I bet you're tempted to read the series right? If that's the case, then great. I totally recommend this series to anyone who loves to read especially the fantasy genre.

By the way, this is the second review I did on The Black Magician trilogy. To read the first one, click here.
