The Bookish Book

The Bookish Synopsis

Alexandra Brennan is stuck in a dead end job working for people she hates in New York, until she bumps into an ex in a bar, and he tells her she'll never make it to graduate school in the UK. Never one to let a challenge pass her by, Alex applies and when she is offered a place at the University of York, she finds herself on a plane to the other side of the Atlantic, wondering what on earth she's done.

Armed with American cigarettes and extra-strength coffee, Alex is ready to face everything Britain has to offer - beer, blokes and more books than she can possibly read in a year. Falling for her lecturer, the divine Sean, and managing to gain a Master's somewhere along the line, Alex realises that instead of running away from home, she might just have found it.

My Bookish Idea

When you're already halfway through the first chapter of a book and you realise that you've found a gem, it's always a good feeling. That was how I felt on page 35 of English As A Second Language.

Let me get this straight. For the past few months, I've been going through chick lit by chick lit like M&M's, thus I feel that I'm "qualified" to tell if a book is good especially after having gone through and survived a few bad apples.

And I hereby proclaim that Megan Crane is good. In fact, she's really good. The witticism and sarcasm she placed in the main character, Alex is the sort of witticism and sarcasm that I wish to have. Of which sadly to say, I'm still quite far off from being as witty and sarcastic as Alex.

There is almost never a dull moment in this book. Maybe just one or two pages of repetitive-ness, but other than that, Megan Crane's writings is just enjoyable!

I'm looking forward to Frenemies, another novel by Crane.

The Bookish Rating
8/10

"Had I found anything interesting in the reading you would have know, you evil old hag, because I would have offered a spontaneous contribution to this discussion."
